
The spray head, where light beats heavy
Start with the part that gets docked a few thousand times a year.
Our standard pull-down head runs 50 to 80 grams in ABS, with an EPDM hose inside. A metal-shell head runs 150 to 200. The shell is real metal, so the hand isn’t wrong about the feel. What the hand misses is what that mass does to the mechanism it hangs on.
A pull-down retracts because something pulls the hose back. Most of what we ship uses a gravity ball — a weight clamped on the hose that drops and draws the head home. A heavy head loads that return. It sags the hose. It seats harder, and over time it works the dock loose or stops sitting flush. A light head drops back clean.
The mainstream advice is to avoid plastic faucets. For a faucet body or a chrome-plated-plastic spout, that advice is right. A pull-down spray head is a different part with a different job. It has to be light enough to retract. It has to dock. It has to match the finish. ABS does all three, where a metal shell wins only the first handshake in the showroom.
Two checks decide whether a head is any good. Neither is on the spec sheet. Before packing, every head on our line is pulled out and let retract five times by hand. Five percent of a run gets a 48-hour cycle test. A head that mis-docks shows up on the bench, before it reaches a kitchen.
For daily use, a light ABS head on a clean dock outlasts a heavy metal-shell head that drifts off its seat. That is the opposite of what the weight in your hand says.
Docking: the spec no one can actually write
Some models use a magnetic dock instead of the gravity ball. It looks tidier and snaps home with a click. It also carries a problem with no clean number.
Set the magnet strong and the head yanks toward the dock hard enough to catch a knuckle. Set it weak and it won’t hold, so the sprayer creeps out on its own. The right strength sits between those. And “right” is a feeling in someone’s hand. It shifts with the user, the head weight, the angle. No torque value satisfies everyone.
That is why most of what we ship is the gravity ball. We ship it because we can predict what it does. A magnet asks a buyer to trust a strength tuned to an average nobody is. A docking feature is only as good as a magnet strength no spec can pin.
Flow you feel versus flow on the box
A faucet’s flow number comes from the aerator. The spout doesn’t set it. And on every faucet we make, the aerator is a bought-in part.
The box quotes gallons per minute. The US federal ceiling for a kitchen faucet is 2.2 gpm at 60 psi. Several states, California among them, hold kitchen faucets to 1.8 gpm, with a temporary override to 2.2 for filling a pot. WaterSense is the label people reach for. It doesn’t cover kitchen faucets at all. Its 1.5 gpm figure is a bathroom-lavatory number, and putting it on a kitchen faucet is a mistake worth catching early.
Because the aerator sets flow, it also sets splash. A tall spout at full pressure throws water off the bowl. The aerator’s pattern is what tames it. We buy aerators to the market’s limit rather than build them. So the flow line on an order is really an aerator line. Name the market and the number follows.
The cartridge, where a service call lives
Handle feel in a showroom tells you almost nothing. The cartridge under it tells you the next decade.
Most of our single-handle kitchen bodies run a 35mm cartridge. Some designs call for 25mm. The size matters less on day one than in year five. That is when a worn cartridge needs a match, and the question is whether the same part is still made and still fits the base. Every feature opens a service line
Every feature that makes a faucet smarter adds a part that can fail. And a call someone has to answer.
Touchless is the clearest case. It brings a sensor, a battery or transformer, and a solenoid valve into a fixture that used to be a handle and a cartridge. The convenience is real. So is the after-sales surface. The Department of Energy doesn’t even count automatic sensors as water-saving devices. A touchless faucet can trip when no one wants it, and run at full flow when it does.
Finish is the quieter version of the same trade. A finish lasts on its type, its batch, and how it is cleaned. The color in the listing photo has little to do with it. A feature earns its place when what it adds outlasts the service line it opens.
What a maker checks before it ships
A good faucet, from the side that builds it, is a short list of parts that each fail the least.
We check the cartridge and its spare match. We check the waterway, and the spray head weight against its dock. We check the hose — 60cm by default, cut to the order on request. We check the aerator against the market’s flow limit, the finish against its batch, and the hole count and thread against the deck. The market decides several of those at once. It sets the flow ceiling. It also sets the certification the faucet must carry. For the US that means NSF/ANSI 61 for what the material may leach, and 372 for lead content, and a plumbing listing such as cUPC/IAPMO. I can’t give you one number that says a faucet is good. The number that matters changes with the part. What I can say is that none of it is the thing your hand grabbed first.
The bodies and finishes are on the kitchen faucet range. The spec that fits a particular sink is a short conversation with the team before a run is booked.
So go back to the spray head in your hand. The light one you took for cheap is the one built to still retract in two years. Good isn’t the part that impresses at the counter. It’s the part still working after the counter is forgotten.

Is a plastic spray head bad?
For a pull-down, no. The head has to be light enough to retract and dock, so ABS at 50 to 80 grams is a design choice. The advice to avoid plastic is about faucet bodies and chrome-plated-plastic spouts.
Are expensive kitchen faucets better?
Sometimes the money buys a finish, a sensor, or a brand. Whether it buys a longer life depends on the cartridge, the waterway, the spray head, and the hose — the parts you can’t see at the price tag.
